Group guitar lessons provide advantages that private one-on-one lessons may not fully resolve. Here's a look at common problems solved by learning with others
1. You’re Too Hard on Yourself
In private lessons, all the attention is on you, and messing up can feel embarrassing. In a group, everyone makes mistakes—it’s normal! You’ll learn to relax and just have fun with it.
2. You Struggle With Rhythm
Playing guitar isn’t just about knowing the chords—it’s about playing in time. When you’re learning alone, it’s hard to practice staying on beat. In a group, you’ll learn how to keep up with everyone else, which makes your rhythm stronger.
3. You Never Get Feedback From Your Peers
In private lessons, your teacher is the only one who tells you how you’re doing. In a group, your classmates can also give you tips—and you can give them feedback, too! Helping each other makes everyone better.
4. You Miss Out on the Fun of Playing Together
Let’s be honest—music is more fun when you play with other people. In group guitar lessons, you get to share jokes, laughs, and cool musical moments with your classmates. It feels awesome when everyone plays something great together!
5. You Don’t Learn How to Make Stuff Up
Improvising, or making up your own music, doesn’t always get covered in private lessons. But in a group, you’ll get to experiment by jamming with others and trying out new ideas. It’s a great way to get creative!
6. You Can’t Fix Mistakes On the Spot
When you mess up in private lessons, your teacher helps you. But in group guitar lessons, you have to listen to everyone else and adjust while playing. This teaches you how to stay on track and fix things quickly.
7. You Don’t Learn How to Jam
Private lessons teach you to play alone, but in a group, you’ll learn how to play as a team. You’ll practice following a leader, sharing solos, and working together to make the music sound awesome.
If you want to learn guitar and have fun with other people, group lessons are the way to go. You’ll play with friends, improve faster, and enjoy the process way more. Plus, you’ll learn skills that go beyond just playing notes—you’ll learn how to really make music.
Some benefits of group guitar lessons
Learn by watching others
Students will benefit from the ability to see how others learn and work through the process of developing their techniques
Make friends and partner up
It will be easy to find other people to practice with between lessons. Most who take private lessons find it harder to meet other guitarists who are at their level
Learn to play songs from the very first class
Even Beginners will play a song in the very first class. As a team, you will learn to play your part at the right time, collectively performing a song.
1 hour classes
Most private lessons are only 30 minutes long. We will have more time to focus on ear training, sight reading, music theory and techniques.
You will learn faster
Learning as a group and seeing others making progress will motivate and inspire you to make the most of daily practice and allow you to advance faster
Learn to communicate musically
Music is a language and you will learn to interact musically with others. Learning to make musical words, sentences, and phrases to tell a story.
Testimonials
My program, together with learning in a group environment, will skyrocket your musical growth in a way that 1 on 1 lessons can never match. Playing with other musicians will become your comfort zone.
Frenquently Asked Questions
You may have concerns about whether group lessons will be right for you. Here are answers to some common questions you may have.
It is true, in private lessons you have my undivided attention. But you don’t really need it. As a guitar instructor it is my job to teach you what to practice, assess your playing, solve any problems, and prevent you from developing bad habits. It doesn’t take long for me to recognize any problems you may have developed over the last week and show you how to correct them. In a group setting, there will be others who are struggling with the same problems you are, and some may be struggling with different problems, but everyone will benefit from seeing how to solve them. I promise you will get the individual attention you need, and will provide time before or after class if you need more help.
I assure you, you cannot get left behind. Beginners start out by learning their first chords. There are easy ways to play these chords (two note chords), and ways to play them using all 6 strings. Neither is hard to play, what’s difficult is developing muscle memory to change between the chords. This will take time and some will definitely develop this faster than others. I will teach you how to practice these changes to develop the muscle memory quickly (without practicing for hours a day).
We will learn contemporary rock, pop, and country songs. Each class will vote on which songs they want to learn. Songs we play in class will have no foul language and will have positive messages. Â
That depends on what kind of music interests you, If you lean more towards singer songwriter folk music, an acoustic would be a better fit. If you want to learn more of a rock style and learn to play solos, an electric would be better. Also keep in mind acoustic guitars use thicker strings and require more strength in your fingers to play. Electrics will require an amplifier which is an extra expense.Â
Acoustic guitar, or an electric guitar with a small amplifier and a 10 foot guitar chord, clip on tuner, guitar picks, extra set of strings, and an accordion file folder for handouts.Â
